What is Endoscopic Discectomy?

Endoscopic discectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove herniated disc material that's compressing spinal nerves. Using a small endoscope and specialized instruments, Dr. Sayuj Krishnan can access and remove the problematic disc material through a tiny incision that spares the back muscles. It is one surgical option for sciatica (leg pain) caused by a herniated disc.

Recovery and discharge timing are individual and are discussed after examination and MRI review. It is one of the procedures offered within our endoscopic spine surgery in Hyderabad programme at Yashoda Hospital, Malakpet.

Benefits of Endoscopic Discectomy

Surgical Features

  • • Smaller incision (8-10mm vs 3-4cm)
  • • Muscle-sparing access
  • • Small working channel
  • • Direct endoscopic view of the nerve

Recovery Points

  • • Discharge timing decided by the team
  • • Pain control planned for each patient
  • • Return to work is individual
  • • Small scar
  • • Risks explained at consultation

When is Endoscopic Discectomy Recommended?

Suitable Candidates

  • • Herniated lumbar disc confirmed on MRI
  • • Leg pain (sciatica) that hasn't improved with conservative treatment
  • • Nerve compression symptoms
  • • Failed 6+ weeks of non-surgical treatment
  • • No significant spinal instability

Symptoms Treated

  • • Severe leg pain (sciatica)
  • • Numbness or tingling in legs/feet
  • • Muscle weakness
  • • Difficulty walking or standing
  • • Pain that worsens with sitting

The Procedure

1

Pre-operative Planning

MRI review, patient positioning, and precise entry point planning using fluoroscopic guidance.

2

Minimal Access

Small incision (8-10mm) and insertion of working cannula under fluoroscopic guidance.

3

Endoscopic Visualization

High-definition endoscope provides clear view of the herniated disc and nerve structures.

4

Disc Removal

Precise removal of herniated disc material using specialized endoscopic instruments.

5

Closure

Minimal sutures required due to small incision size.

3D View of the Disc Removal Step

The model shows an L4–L5 transforaminal approach: the working tube and endoscope enter through the opening beside the joint, and the herniated disc fragment next to the nerve root is being grasped.

Animation of the Procedure Steps

This 24-second, silent, computer-generated animation follows the same L4–L5 approach from start to finish: the disc fragment pressing on the nerve root, the working tube docking beside the joint, the fragment being grasped and removed through the endoscope, and the instruments being withdrawn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Endoscopic Spine Surgery the same as Laser Spine Surgery?

No. Laser spine surgery uses heat to shrink disc material. Endoscopic spine surgery uses a camera and instruments to remove disc material when examination and MRI support that approach.

How long does the surgery take?

Endoscopic discectomy typically takes 45-90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the case.

Will I need general anesthesia?

Yes, endoscopic discectomy is performed under general anesthesia for patient comfort and safety.

What's the success rate?

Endoscopic discectomy aims to relieve leg pain caused by a herniated disc. How likely it is to help in your case is discussed after examination and MRI review.

Can the disc herniate again?

Disc recurrence is possible after discectomy. Follow-up care is planned individually.
